Tactile Indicators have been designed to assist the visually impaired navigate their way around more efficiently and provide direction and awareness of any potential hazards. Set out by the Australian Standards 1428.4 the tactile indicators (TGSIs) must follow a strict set of guidelines in order to ensure an effective guidance system.

The tactile indicators are designed to be as visual as possible. Therefore, luminance contrast values (LRV) are available for all of our products in order that a contrast percentage can be calculated against the finished floor surface. The Australian standards require that:

The tactile indicators are required to meet and/or exceed these contrasts in both wet conditions and dry conditions.

The TGSI’s must follow a certain setout in order to comply with AS 1428.4 and by following these simple guidelines you can ensure your project meets the requirements:

Stair Nosing

More and more often, fire audits in commercial buildings are bringing to the attention of builders owners and management the need to ensure that the fire and public access stairs meet the latest requirements. This can be a relatively simply upgrade provided you choose the right product.

So how should the nosing look on the step?

AS 1428.1:2009 requires that new building works must include a nosing strip on the tread of each step that highlights the edge while providing suitable slip resistance to user. There are certain criteria that must be met in order to comply with these standards including:

Taking into considerations the requirements of the AS 1428.1:2009 the nosing should have a minimum of 50mm contrasting strip and the face of the nosing not extend past 10mm

If the nosing is to be installed into a recessed step then the setback should be to a maximum of 15mm.

The set out of the skate deterrent can vary depending on client preference but is best spaced between 400 and 2000mm centre to ensure the most effective protection.
